Died in Service. |
| East and West Africa
Medal 1892 named to J. Harris A.B. HMS Racoon with Mwele 1895.
John Harris was a native of Feock Cornwall and was born on 15th
April 1868, he joined the navy on 21st July 1881, aged 13 years
as a boy 2nd class, his occupation was 'fisherman' (no time in
those days for hanging around on street corners drinking
alcopops!') The Mwele expedition was conducted from August 1895
- April 1896 under Admiral Rawson consisting of seamen
equipped with 2 maxims a 7 pounder gun and a rocket tube. The
seamen came from the HM ships St. George, Phoebe, Racoon,
Barossa Thrush, Widgeon and Blonde. Mwele was the stronghold of
Mbaruk a prosperous coastal Arab.
In the entire history of British campaign
medals this is the only example of a campaign being inscribed on
the rim instead of a bar. Both the Witu 1890 and the '93
campaigns which were of shorter duration were commemorated with
a bar. Considering that at least 300 naval personnel took part
it seems odd that only 106 were nominated in the London Gazette.
The medal entitlement to H.M.Ships was: Barrosa - 5, Phoebe - 4,
Racoon - 70, St George - 22, Thrush - 4, Widgeon - 1. |
